Did someone say we have to address the problem with prison overcrowding? Yes, I do believe it was the Lord Chancellor, Alex Chalk KC MP, just a few weeks ago. In fact, I wrote a blog about it here.
So, what is one of the main proposals of the King’s speech? You’ve guessed it, an increase in sentencing. A measure that will only increase the prison population (as predicted).
Sadly, the King’s speech said nothing to address the chronic lack of funding in the criminal justice system, any measures to deal with delays in cases proceeding to trial, or investment in the crumbling court estate. The measures proposed totally fail to grasp the fundamental problems we have in our criminal justice and prison systems.
