Housing and Property Litigation

For almost 50 years, Bindmans has been a leader in protecting and extending the housing rights of ordinary people. Our expertise ranges from bringing cases in the county courts through to the Supreme Court, and in the right case to the European Court in Strasbourg. We don’t give up.

Whether it is a dispute between one tenant and their negligent landlord on a well-established point of law, or a group action which will lead to widespread changes in the law, we provide a creative and effective service.

Our housing team is led by Paul Ridge, consistently ranked for over a decade as a leader in the field of housing. Described in legal directories as ‘second-to-none when acting for defendants in possession proceedings’, ‘exceptionally clever’ and as ‘really making a difference’.

This practice is very hands-on, there is nothing too complicated for them to consider and achieve on behalf of a client, in fact they will always go above and beyond to achieve the best possible outcome in the client’s favour.

Housing disputes can be hugely distressing for those involved and we work hard to get the best result as quickly as possible and to minimise the stress our clients face.

  • Judicial review of housing policies
  • Right to buy disputes
  • Illegal eviction & harassment
  • Succession rights
  • Security of tenure
  • Squatters’ rights & adverse possession
  • Possession proceedings
  • Disrepair
  • Service charges
  • Rent disputes at assessment committees
  • Links with capacity problems – hoarding & diogenes syndrome

The team has particular strength in dealing with vulnerable tenants with capacity issues and the tricky overlap of community care needs.

I have worked with a number of individuals at this practice and have found over the years that no task or question is unimportant, they will exhaust every possible scenario before conceding that there is no alternative outcome for a possible situation and even then will still consider how it would be possible to assist in obtaining the very best outcome for the client.
