The plight of refugees may no longer be in the headlines, but the world wide refugee crisis continues. The plight of people who want to seek asylum in the UK and who are stuck in the shocking conditions in the “Jungle” in Calais, and in the similar camp at Dunkirk is a stain on Europe. Three Bindmans’ lawyers, Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC, Alison Stanley and Liz Barratt, were signatories to the Judges’ and Lawyers’ statement on the refugee crisis of October 2015, and it is encouraging to see that the inter-faith refugee initiative, supporting the judges’ and lawyers’ “four refugee principles” has been endorsed by over 220 faith leaders. Signatories include Lord Dr. Rowan Williams the former Archbishop of Canterbury; Harun Rashid Khan, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain; Sanjay Jagatia, Secretary General, Hindu Council UK; Lord Singh CBE of Wimbledon, Director of the Network of Sikh Organisations, UK; and Baroness Rabbi Julia Neuberger.
The faith leaders’ statement and the full list of signatories can now be seen here.
