The first Brexit summit for European leaders is taking place this weekend and one of the topics expected to be on the agenda is Northern Ireland’s EU membership in the event that the whole of Ireland one day unifies. Upon negotiating the finer details of eventual Brexit, the Irish government is eager to include a clause that would enable the north to automatically become a member of the EU upon any future union with the remainder of Ireland. The Good Friday peace agreement states that north and south have a right to unify if a majority agree north of the border, however the desire to become one Republic remains amongst a minority with a recent poll suggesting only 22% of people would back a united Ireland. Whether re-gaining European Union membership would be a strong incentive for unification is a question for another day.
